Christmas is a time for good food, jolly music, and nostalgia-inducing festive films. From the bustling streets of London in Love Actually to the snowy Chicago suburbs in Home Alone, many festive classics feature houses as iconic as the characters.
A number of the houses we see on our screens are real houses, many of which have changed hands on the property market in recent years.

The “Home Alone” house
Few film homes are as instantly recognizable as Kevin McCallister’s family house from Home Alone. The grand, red-brick property, located in Winnetka, Illinois, is a multi-generational symbol of Christmas nostalgia, and is the ultimate Christmas dream home for many.
Outside of our screens, the home is just as grand, although perhaps not always quite as festive.
For one lucky family, the ultimate Christmas dream home became a reality. The 10-bedroom house sold in 2012 for $1.585 million, which at the time was approximately £1.01 million. The house sold far below the asking price of $2.4 million (£1.53 million) but remains a treasured landmark in the hearts and minds of many.
The “Holiday” cottage
There are few British Christmas films quite as iconic as The Holiday, starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and a charming little country cottage. While the actual cottage in the film is unfortunately fictional, the on-screen home was inspired by a real-life cottage located in the heart of Surrey.
The quintessentially British home, “Honeysuckle Cottage” sold in 2019 for £625,000, boasting many of the features that made film goers fall in love with the cottage; the inglenook fireplace, the exposed timbers and brickwork, and the leaded light windows.
In a humourous twist, the purchasing couple appear not to have been fans of The Holiday and were unaware of the property’s significance until after they had moved in and were curious as to why tourists repeatedly turned up to photograph their house.
The “Family Stone” house
The white clapboard house from The Family Stone could be considered to be as much of a character as the family who inhabit it. Located in Riverside, Connecticut, this charming and warm house is the epitome of being “home for the holidays”.
Much like the Home Alone house, the home featured in The Family Stone is a real world property. With timeless external charm and a warm, spacious interior, this house was the envy of many when the film was released in 2006.
The 3,560 sqft property houses 4 bedrooms and multiple living areas. It sold in 2008 for $4.1 million dollars, which at the time equated to £2.06 million – a price tag which reflects its place in cinematic history.
The “Miracle on 34th Street” house
For fans of festive magic, few films are as iconic as Miracle on 34th Street. For fans of Colonial-style homes, few houses are as iconic at the suburban, Illinois home in the 1994 remake.
Embodying warmth and joy, this house’s charming exterior, dormer windows and sloping roof portray the essence of a traditional Christmas.
Inside, the house boasts cosy living spaces, decorated fireplaces and a real sense of nostalgia.
The Miracle on 34th Street house sold in 2016 for $2.4 million, which equated to £1.825 at the time – a testament to its desirability as both a dream house and a piece of festive cinematic history.
The “A Christmas Story” house
The iconic yellow house from A Christmas Story has a cherished place in Christmas cinema history and is synonymous with festive nostalgia. Found in Cleveland, Ohio, the charming home serves as a backdrop for the film and embodies the essence of Christmas in 1940’s America.
Unlike the other houses on this listing, A Christmas Story’s famous house is no longer a residential property. In 2004, the house was sold on Ebay for just $150,00,and was subsequently converted into a museum dedicated to the film in which it starred, showcasing memorabilia and recreating famous scenes.
